This beginner-friendly loop route follows the refreshing coastline of the Ariake Sea, with open views extending toward Amakusa.

The route also offers opportunities to learn about Minami Shimabara’s Christian heritage, and includes time to relax at Harajo Onsen, with bathing and accommodation available along the journey.

Located beside the scenic Suwa-no-Ike Pond with views of Mount Fugen, the Unzen Suwa no Ike Visitor Center offers year-round opportunities to learn about local plants, wildlife, and the natural environment through interactive exhibits.
The centerIt also houses one of Kyushu’s largest refracting telescopes, with a 250 mm aperture and 650× magnification, allowing visitors to enjoy astronomical observation.
At night, the clear skies around Suwa-no-Ike reveal a spectacular, star-filled view.

World Heritage Site: Hara Castle Ruins

Hara Castle Ruins mark the site of the final battle of the Shimabara–Amakusa Rebellion of 1637.
After four months of intense fighting, almost all members of the rebel forces lost their lives. Today, visitors can explore remains such as dry moats, the ruins of the main of honmaru, and turret foundations. Guided tours are also available by advance reservation.
Statues and gravestones dedicated to the rebel leader, Amakusa Shiro Tokisada, can also be found on the site.

Dolphin Watching

Around 300 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins inhabit the waters between the Shimabara Peninsula and Amakusa.
Visitors have the opportunity to observe these dolphins in their natural environment.
While sightings depend on weather and sea conditions, dolphins are generally seen at a very high rate when tour boats are able to operate.
