Shimabara Onsen is lLocated in the castle town where koi carp swim through the streets and is known for its neutral, skin-friendly hot spring waters.
In addition to easily accessible foot baths throughout the town,, the hot spring water is drinkable and has long been valued for its health-related properties.
There are seven drinking spring stations located across the city.

Opened on March 21, 2000, Shimabara Mayuyama Road is a scenic mountain route that runs close to Heisei Shinzan, a volcanic peak formed by recent eruptions.
Stretching approximately 8 km, the road passes the Heisei Shinzan Observation Area, where visitors can see traces of past volcanic activity, including pyroclastic and debris flows, as well as an extensive network of erosion control dams.

Heisei Shinzan Nature Center

Located directly beneath Heisei Shinzan, approximately 2.5 km from the summit, the Nature Center offers spectacular views of the mountain on clear days.
Visitors can also observe the gradual recovery of vegetation—grasses and trees—following the Heisei eruption, now more than a quarter century ago.

Shimabara Hibaru-yama Flower Park

This flower takes its name from a former mountain watch post that once stood here during the eruption of Mount Fugen over 200 years ago.
In spring, the park is filled with cherry blossoms, rapeseed flowers, and poppies, while autumn brings vibrant displays of cosmos and sunflowers.

Unzen Nita Pass

Unzen Nita Pass is a popular scenic spot where visitors can enjoy the changing beauty of nature throughout the seasons.
In spring, Miyama Kirishima azaleas bloom across the area, while autumn brings colorful foliage, and winter offers views of frost-covered trees.
From Nita Pass, the Unzen Ropeway provides easy access toward Myoken Peak at an elevation of 1,333 meters, allowing visitors to enjoy a relaxing aerial walk with views of the surrounding highland landscape.

As you approach the hot spring town, the distinctive scent of sulfur fills the air.
Unzen Onsen is known for its seasonal beauty, from Miyama Kirishima azaleas in spring to vibrant autumn foliage, as well as its geothermal “hell” areas, where steam and heat rise from the volcanic landscape.
The sulfur-rich hot spring water is valued for its antibacterial properties and is widely believed to be beneficial for skin health.

Approximately 30 hot spring sources draw water at 105°C, with a total daily output of about 15,000 tons.

Hotto Futto 105 is a 105-meter-long foot bath inspired by the source temperature of Obama Onsen and is recognized as the longest foot bath in Japan.
It attracts approximately 150,000 visitors each year.
At sunset, visitors can enjoy soaking their feet while watching the sun set over Tachibana Bay.
Adjacent steam facilities allow anyone to steam vegetables and seafood using natural hot spring steam.

Green Tunnel (Kishamichi Railway Path)
Green Tunnel, also known locally as “Kishamichi,” follows the route of a former railway that once ran along the coast between the Chijiwa area and Obama Onsen.
Today, it serves as Prefectural Route 201.
Lush trees lining both sides of the road create a tunnel-like canopy, making it a popular and picturesque coastal drive.
As the road is narrow in places, visitors are advised to proceed with care.
